The debt snowball method is a debt repayment strategy popularized by personal finance expert Dave Ramsey. It focuses on paying off debts in order from smallest to largest, regardless of interest rates. Here’s how it works:

  1. List Your Debts: Make a list of all your debts, including credit card balances, personal loans, student loans, and any other outstanding debts. Arrange them from smallest to largest based on the total outstanding balance.
  2. Minimum Payments: Continue making minimum payments on all your debts except the smallest one.
  3. Allocate Extra Funds: Identify any extra funds in your budget that you can allocate towards debt repayment. This could be from cutting expenses, increasing income, or reallocating funds from non-essential spending categories.
  4. Pay Off Smallest Debt: Take the extra funds you’ve identified and put them towards paying off the smallest debt on your list. Focus all your extra debt repayment money on this debt while continuing to make minimum payments on the others.
  5. Celebrate Progress: Once you’ve paid off the smallest debt, celebrate your progress! This achievement can provide motivation to continue with the debt repayment process.
  6. Snowball Effect: With the smallest debt paid off, take the amount you were paying towards that debt (including the minimum payment) and apply it to the next smallest debt on your list. This “snowball effect” accelerates your debt repayment by increasing the amount you’re putting towards each subsequent debt.
  7. Repeat: Continue this process of paying off each debt one by one, rolling the payments from paid-off debts into the next debt on your list. As you pay off each debt, the amount you can put towards the next one grows larger, helping you progress more quickly towards becoming debt-free.

The debt snowball method is effective because it provides psychological wins by paying off smaller debts first, creating momentum and motivation to tackle larger debts. While it may not be the most mathematically efficient method in terms of minimizing interest payments, it can be highly effective for individuals who need the psychological boost of seeing progress quickly.
