Let’s face it: we’re all on a limited timeline. In a century, almost everyone reading this will be gone. While that thought might be uncomfortable, it presents a crucial question: if the unexpected happened tomorrow, would your loved ones be left with a financial nightmare on top of their grief?

Do they know where to find your accounts, insurance, debts, and digital access? Do you have a will outlining your wishes?

My solution is a “legacy file” – a secure place to store all this vital information and a letter for my family. Think of it as an act of love, preventing unnecessary stress during an already difficult time.

Whether you trust family with access now or need a lawyer’s help, having a plan is essential. I even set an annual reminder to update my legacy file and share access instructions. What’s the point of a legacy file if it’s outdated or inaccessible when it’s needed most?

None of us want to think about it, but being prepared isn’t morbid; it’s responsible. Consider creating your own “legacy file” – it might just be the best gift you can leave behind.
