That “just one thing” trip to Target that turns into a $400 shopping spree? It’s not just a joke; it’s a universal experience. We’ve all fallen victim to the impulse buy. But before you step into another store, let’s arm you with some practical hacks to keep your wallet happy.

First, the Crucial Question: Need or Want?

There’s no judgment here, but you need to be honest with yourself. Is this purchase a genuine need or a fleeting want?

If it’s a Need:

  • The “One Day Delay”: Inspired by “Profit First,” can you wait just 24 hours? This buys you time and perspective.
  • Hunt for Savings: Use apps like Honey, check RetailMeNot for coupons, and explore consignment shops.
  • Join a “Buy Nothing” Group: You’ll be amazed at the quality items people give away.
  • Negotiate the Price: Look for sales, coupons, used options on Craigslist, eBay, or Facebook Marketplace.
  • Explore Alternatives: What happens if you skip the purchase? Is there another way to solve the problem?
  • Consider a Trade: Can you swap a service or product for what you need?
  • Share the Cost: Split the purchase with a neighbor or friend.

If it’s a Want:

  • Value Check: Will this purchase genuinely enhance your life?
  • Cash Only: Can you pay your credit card balance in full right now? If not, it’s a no-go.
  • The Time Cost: Calculate your hourly income. How many hours of your life will this purchase cost? Is it truly worth it?
  • Cost Per Use: Break down the cost per wear or use. Will you get your money’s worth?
  • The 24-Hour Pause: Wait a full day before buying to avoid impulse purchases.
  • The 48-Hour Return Window: Keep the receipt and hold off on using the item for two days. If you change your mind, return it.
  • The Investor Mindset: Instead of buying that $50 shirt, invest $50. Shift from consumer to investor.
